Nutrition and Exercise

Of the top five causes of death in the US, three can be directly related to diet and lifestyle.   Unfortunately that correlates to tens of thousands of preventable deaths a year all due to poor diet and lack of exercise.   Nutrition is the fundamental platform that determines health and wellness.   Through learning healthy habits and easy ways to change from the Standard American Diet (S.A.D..oh yes it is) a person can often help control their health without other invasive medical intervention.   Naturopathic nutrition focuses on a diet rich in fruits and veggies, low in refined sugars and grown as organically as possible.   Exercise is also a fundamental element in the health equation and naturopathic medicine is helpful in encouraging and creating efficient exercise regimes.

Botanical Medicine

It is estimated that 2% of the plants currently discovered on this earth comprise 25% of our current pharmaceuticals. Needless to say herbs are incredibly powerful and useful in fighting disease and regaining health.   Botanical medicine has been a known source of healing in many cultures for centuries and continues to be the main form of medical treatment in many cultures.   Plants, whether they are used for culinary purposes or as medicine, can have a very profound and powerful effect on health and healing.   When prescribed correctly, botanicals are very efficient at treating many ailments, including women’s hormonal and menstrual issues (including stopping hot flashes), fertility concerns, chronic pain, GERD, IBS and other GI complaints, acne and as adjunctive cancer treatment.

Nutritional Supplementation and nutrient IV therapy

Our body undergoes thousands of biochemical processes every day, almost all of which require vitamins, minerals, amino acids and other nutrients.   Unfortunately with conventional farming practices today, many of these essential nutrients are no longer available in substantial enough quantities in our food.   Often times a specific nutrient or nutrients are deficient in a person leading to internal imbalance which presents as physical symptoms.   Many nutrients are essential for health and are needed in much higher doses then the government recommended dosing schedule (R.D.A) which is only necessary to prevent overt disease, not to maintain health.  IV therapy is a safe and fast way to supply the body with adequate levels of minerals and vitamins which can quite often eliminate conditions associated with chronic disease and fatigue.

        Bio-identical hormones

Several studies have indicated that conventional hormone replacement therapy can be dangerous and even deadly.  In understanding that exogenous (not made internally) hormones are sometimes necessary to get people through times of hormone imbalance, ND's are trained to utilize bio-identical hormones.  Bio-identical hormones look and act more like natural hormones in our bodies and are generally made from extracts of plants and vegetables.  These natural hormones seem to pose less of a risk yet are just as effective as the synthetic ones at treating symptoms associated with hormone imbalance in both men and women such as erectile dysfunction, hot flashes, pain with intercourse fatigue and insomnia.

Mind-body medicine

Naturopathic medicine is founded in the idea that a human is a multifaceted being, not just a machine whose parts can break.   We know that approximately 45% of people will get better when given a placebo, which should tell us that the mind is a very powerful tool that should not be forgotten in a treatment plan.   We strive to treat both the mental emotional state as well as physical symptoms.   We will often use guided imagery, meditation, yoga, breathing exercises and other techniques to help alleviate symptoms and reduce stress.

Homeopathy

Is a type of energy medicine that is prescribed based on very specific symptoms and attributes in a person’s life.   Homeopathy also has a long history of use and was founded in the 1700’s by Dr. Hahnemann who was looking for alternative treatments to the medical model of the time which included using bloodletting, and giving mercury and other toxic chemicals as treatment.   Homeopathic remedies are very dilute forms of plants, minerals, animals, and other substances that often provide profound healing with virtually no side effects ever reported.

Hydrotherapy

This is an old technique founded in Germany using water and temperature gradients.   Hydrotherapy incorporates the use of hot and cold water to enhance circulation and promote lymphatic flow.   The treatments can be as simple as putting ice on a new injury, to alternating hot and cold towels over the back and abdomen to promote increased digestive stimulation.   These treatments help reduce stagnation and alleviating musculoskeletal pain while also stimulate digestion and boost immune function.
