Clinical Nutrition Hippocrates wrote, “Let your food be your medicine, and medicine be your food.” Food is the best medicine and is a cornerstone of our naturopathic practice. Many medical conditions can be treated more effectively with foods and nutritional supplements than they can by other means, with fewer complications and side effects. Examination of the diet for sensitivities, allergies, and/or deficiencies is the basis for restoring health. Clinical nutrition is the use of both dietary therapy as well as the careful recommendation of researched vitamins, minerals and other nutriceuticals. Clinical nutrition is the practice of using what we eat to enhance our health, reverse disease and heal pathology. Adopting a healthy diet is often the first step towards correcting health problems. Many medical conditions can be treated more effectively with foods than they can by other means, and with fewer complications and side effects. I use specific individualized diets to help restore optimal functioning, on a cellular level, to my patients' health. Orthomolecular medicine/ Vitamin/Mineral Supplementation Not only
can inadequate nutrition lead to disease, but also certain disease processes
can wear on the body and create deficiencies, which lead to further disease. There
is more and more research available with regard to using vitamins, minerals,
amino acids, enzymes, trace elements, and fatty acids to restore the optimum
environment of the body by correcting imbalances or deficiencies based on
individual biochemistry. Botanical Medicine Botanical (Herbal) Medicine is the use of plants as medicine. Many plant substances are powerful medicines that are safe and effective when used properly. A resurgence of scientific research in Europe and Asia is demonstrating that some plant substances are superior to synthetic drugs in clinical conditions. Plants have been used for thousands of years for their medicinal properties and many pharmaceutical drugs have their origins in plant substances. Naturopathic practitioners use blended teas, liquid herbal extracts and tinctures, tablets, encapsulations, salves and poultices to treat a myriad of health imbalances. Most European countries recognize the effectiveness of medicinal plants, include them in their official pharmacopoeias and regulate them as drugs or over-the-counter remedies. Naturopathic physicians are trained in drug-herb interactions to insure safety with the use of herbal medicines. Naturopathic physicians fuse centuries’ worth of traditional knowledge about herbal medicine with the enormous amount of ongoing scientific research on botanical medicine to treat many health conditions. Homeopathic Medicine Homeopathy is a system of medicine more than two hundred years old with
more than one hundred homeopathic medical colleges worldwide. Often
mistakenly equated to naturopathic medicine by orthodox medicine and
lay persons alike, homeopathy is a single therapy within the larger
scope of naturopathic medicine. This
gentle yet effective system of medicine is more than 200 years old and is based
on the principle that "like cures like". Homeopathic medicines are
very small doses of natural substances (from plants, animals, minerals, etc.)
that can stimulate the body's self-healing response without side effects.
Homeopathy is used for acute conditions, such as colds and flu;
constitutionally, for more chronic problems; and also for detoxification and
drainage to help in the course of treatment. Hydrotherapy
Hydrotherapy is a
treatment modality that uses water therapy to move stagnant circulation and
lymphatic flow throughout the body. When the circulation is compromised
or stagnant, disease can take hold. The application of hot water pulls
blood into the area under the application bringing in fresh nutrients and
immune cells, cold water pushes blood away from the area of application and
helps to clear inflammation. Naturopaths use hydrotherapy to stimulate
the vital force of the body thereby stimulating the speed of the healing
process of common illnesses such as upper respiratory infections, broken bones
and skin ulcers. Detoxification
In the world that we
live in it is difficult to avoid pollutants and substances, which burden our
bodies and overwhelm our natural detoxification pathways. Detoxification therapy is performed using various diets and supplementation to promote detoxification for general
cleansing and to eliminate heavy metal/environmental toxicities that is specific for your situation. Cranial
Sacral Therapy A gentle hands-on therapy that aids in relaxation and helps
restore normal body function. Based on the belief that the body knows exactly
how to heal. Lifestyle
Counseling/ Modification The cornerstones of Naturopathic philosophy are prevention and responsibility for one's own health. Naturopathic treatments often are based on assessing risk factors connected to the patient's lifestyle, diet, and environment. Each of these factors is taken under consideration when developing a treatment plan with a client. The goal is to remove obstacles to the patient's own state of optimal health. From this evaluation, specific lifestyle changes will be recommended. Once incorporated, these healthy new habits create long-term health with emphasis on prevention. Ultra Lite Weight Loss Program

This program is a shorter program that can be limited to 4
weeks for some, depending on the goals. The goal is to use healthy food and lifestyle changes in a
prescribed manner to reduce weight, reverse pre-diabetes, metabolic syndrome and to prevent
diabetes. Food
Sensitivity Testing This is
an in office test to help determine the impact of commonly eaten foods on your
symptoms. The test measures IgG antibodies. IgG antibodies represent the most
prevalent class found in the blood. It is produced after you have been exposed
more than once. It is the primary mediator of the memory immune response. Often
involved in Type III delayed hypersensitivity reactions, IgG forms an immune
complex with the allergen. This antibody/antigen complex activates complement
(a group of small proteins found circulating in the blood stream that are
involved in the release of inflammatory mediators). The inflammatory process is
gradual and may take anywhere from several hours to several days, which is why
this type of reaction is termed, delayed Depending on which tissues are
involved, it is thought that these complexes may be implicated in many
different conditions/symptoms. Neurotransmitter
and Hormone Testing I utilize
urine and saliva testing to measure neurotransmitter and hormone levels,
respectively. This testing can help us to understand why a patient may be
experiencing conditions like depression, anxiety, weight gain, irritability,
fatigue, and poor focus and mental clarity. The results obtained
through the testing help to guide treatment very specifically, with very
effective outcomes.
