SENATE BILL 314 AND HOUSE BILL 402
NEWS AND EVENTS
February 10, 2014
After successful hearings in the Senate Education, Health
and Environmental Affairs (EHEA) Committee on January 29th and the
House Health and Government Operations (HGO) Committee on February 4th,
the MDANP is now in the process of working with stakeholders (including MedChi
and the Maryland Board of Physicians) to find common ground regarding
outstanding concerns with scope of practice.
Overall, there is a great deal of support around this
legislation in both the House and the Senate and the MDANP is working very hard
to keep positive momentum going as the bill progresses.
An important sign of progress this session was a supportive
testimony from the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) which
supported a scope of practice for NDs including diagnosis and treatment using
physical exam and laboratory testing.
The EHEA will likely bring SB 314 to a vote very soon and as
soon as the bill moves out of committee, it will quickly head to the Senate

MDANP LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
SUMMER STUDY 2013 & BOARD OF PHYSICIANS REPORTThe Maryland Association of Naturopathic Physicians, in cooperation with the Maryland Board of Physicians, was involved in a Summer Study to review the issue of how and under what conditions naturopathic doctors will be licensed in Maryland. This was an excellent opportunity for the profession to offer education and information to other health care organizations, legislators, and other groups who have expressed interest in our bill.
